Police expect to close down over 2000 websites in the next five weeks which purportedly sell branded items for discounted prices. Many of these items are counterfeit with online villains taking advantage of the credit crunch as well as seasoned bargain hunters

Advice from the Police E-crime unit says that online shoppers should check that the website they are purchasing from is reputable, which begs the question, how do I check whether a website is legitimate:

• Check whether there is an address, this can be misleading but if a site has an address which is a PO box the chances are the company trading either doesn’t exist or may have issues on delivering on their promises
• Check who owns the domain you have visited. Visit Nominet whois, existing customers give us details and we will check for you. If the company is legitimate all there registered office details will be on this site
• If they have a telephone number, call it
• Anti virus software will often flag up these types of website, if you don’t have this software running on your system I would amend this straight away
• When making a purchase most sites will require to create an account (so they can sell you more things in the future) if a site is solely concerned in getting your card details the chances are that this site is no all that it should be
• Finally, pay for any purchases over £100 on your credit card as if the site is a fraudulent on then you will get a full refund from your credit card company
